The Power of Provocation

Year 4

How do you engage students into a new unit of work?

Our Year 4 teachers asked this question when planning for this term’s inquiry unit into how we are connected to the rest of the world. One way teachers engage students is by designing a purposeful provocation. Provocations allow us to spark learning opportunities. They ignite thought, curiosity, wonder, engagement, and questions with our learners.

The Year 4 teachers designed two provocations. Students were met with a display of our universe as they walked into school last Wednesday. It immediately sparked curiosities with the students and the questions came thick and fast. It generated a great enthusiasm for students and teachers alike.
