Shine a Light on Design

Year 6 Inquiry Unit

Last term, our Year 6 students investigated the big question “What is light and how does it travel?”.

Students began by identifying and describing how light interacts with various materials through a series of experiments. They tested translucent, transparent, and opaque objects, closely observing how light travelled through, reflected off, or was absorbed by each.

This understanding proved crucial as they moved into the design phase of their project, designing and creating lanterns for their One World, One Stage concert song. The students considered the importance of aesthetics, function, sustainability, and ethics and thoughtfully applied these considerations when designing their own product. They also considered factors such as light transmission, durability, and environmental impact.

One World, One Stage provided the ultimate scene for the students to showcase their designs to the St. Anthony’s community. And how good did they light up at the night concert!
