Year 6

On Friday the 30th of May, 48 students represented St. Anthonys in the Winter Lightning Premiership in AFL, netball and teeball. The games were all held at Baccus Marsh Recreational Reserve and all students demonstrated great sportsmanship and uphelded St. Anthonys Primary Schools values.

Football

St Anthony’s Grade 6 AFL team delivered an outstanding performance at the recent interschool competition, showing incredible determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the day.

Facing off against Melton, Heathdale, St Lawrence, and Melton South, the team secured convincing wins in every match. Their gameplay was marked by strong tackling, quick handballs, smart positioning, and effective teamwork — a true showcase of skill and unity on the field.

One of the standout highlights of the day was the team’s high number of female players, the most across all schools. Their contribution was vital, and the inclusive, team-first mindset was on full display in every game.

After strong performances in the rounds, St Anthony’s earned a spot in the grand final against Wedge Park — a team that had previously defeated them in a practice match. Despite nerves, the team rose to the occasion, going goal for goal in a tight first half and surprising their opponents with sharp improvement and resilience.

Although Wedge Park eventually pulled ahead, St Anthony’s finished as proud runners-up. The team left the field with heads held high, celebrating not only their result but their growth, teamwork, and unwavering school spirit.

Netball

The Girls’ team kicked off the competition with a thrilling match against Melton South Primary, which ended in a hard-fought draw. Their determination only grew stronger, leading to a solid victory against St Lawrence thanks to a dominant performance in the centre court. In their final match, needing a win to reach the finals, the team dug deep and claimed a two-goal victory over Melton Primary.

The Mixed team started strong, defeating Melton Primary with fast ball movement and excellent goal shooting. In their second game, they outplayed Melton South Primary, with strong defensive efforts and smart attacking play. Their final match saw them take on St Lawrence, where tactical changes and solid teamwork led to another win.

Both teams qualified for finals, with the Girls competing for third place and the Mixed team playing for the championship. Despite valiant efforts, both teams were narrowly defeated. The Girls finished fourth overall out of 11 teams, while the Mixed team proudly took out second place.

The coaching staff praised the players for their enthusiasm, resilience, and positive spirit throughout the day. It was a memorable and successful carnival for all involved.

Teeball

St Anthony’s Primary School proudly competed in the Winter Lightning Premiership for Teeball, with both the Girls’ and Mixed teams delivering standout performances.

The Girls’ team played four matches in their pool, securing three wins and finishing second overall. This strong result earned them a spot in the play-off for third place against Kurunjang. After a tightly contested game, the match ended in a draw, placing the team equal third out of 11 schools — a fantastic achievement.

The Mixed team also had a stellar day, winning three out of four games and topping their pool. Their first-place finish led them to the Grand Final against Coburn Primary. In an exciting and competitive match, the team emerged victorious with an 8–6 win, claiming the championship title.

With this result, the Mixed team now advances to the Divisional round later this term. Both teams demonstrated exceptional teamwork, skill, and sportsmanship, making the school community proud.
