Year 2 Werribee Zoo Excursion
On Thursday, 29th May, our Year 2 students embarked on an exciting adventure to Werribee Open Range Zoo, transforming into “Habitat Heroes” for the day!
This hands-on excursion was part of their Inquiry, Literacy, and Religion learning, where they explored the diverse habitats of animals and learned how to protect them. Students learned about the basic needs of living things; food, water, and shelter, and how these needs are met in different habitats. By observing and interacting with the animals, they gained a deeper understanding of the need for sustainability and stewardship.
Throughout the day, the students participated in a Zoo Teacher workshop titled “Habitats, Features and Life Cycles”, exploring the various habitats within the zoo. They looked under logs for insects, used binoculars to investigate bushes and animals, identified scat from different animals and constructed safe water bowls for wildlife to drink from.
Students began investigating how animals are uniquely adapted to their environments, ensuring their survival. A highlight of the day was the Safari Bus Tour, which offered a closer look at these biomes and habitats, and provided insights into the animals’ behaviors and needs.
The excursion was a memorable experience, instilling a sense of responsibility and stewardship in our students. The lessons learned as “Habitat Heroes” will inspire students to continue to take action in caring for the environment.
