Student Safety During School Holidays

How to Play it Safe

As we approach the end of Term 1 and the upcoming school holidays, we wish all students and their families a safe and happy break. A few important things to remember are our water and road safety tips.

Water Safety

St Anthony’s Primary School works in partnership with ‘Royal Life Saving Australia & Genesis Melton’ to deliver the importance of being Water Smart to our students. Royal Life Saving aims to teach 100, 000 children each year across Australia to be Water Smart, in order to prevent drowning and increase participation in safe aquatic activity.

The Water Smart Award focuses on:

  • Water Safety knowledge

  • Introduction to resuscitation principles

  • Basic reach and throw rescue techniques

Water Safety Tips:

  1. Never swim alone – always have a buddy

  2. Always check how deep the water is – especially if you cannot see the bottom

  3. Obey signs, warning flags and lifeguards

  4. Always wear a life jacket while on a boat

  5. No running around the pool edge – you could easily slip, fall and hurt yourself

Road Safety

Road safety is important for all students. Below are 6 key road safety messages:

  1. Stop! Look! Listen! Think! – Every time you cross the road
  2. Use a safe place to cross the road
  3. Always wear a seatbelt
  4. Get in and out of the car on the footpath side
  5. Always wear your helmet when you ride, scooter or skate
  6. Ride your bike away from busy roads
