Literacy News
Take Home Reading has officially begun! In Foundation to Year Two, students are expected to read independently or to someone else for 15 minutes at least 4 times a week and record this in their diaries. Students and/or families must record:
- The date
- The title of the book
- How long they read for, the number of pages read OR an optional response to the book, e.g. “I liked this book because…”
- A running total of how many days the student has read during the year
- Parent/guardian signature

We request that families sign their child’s diary daily or weekly to encourage and support their reading journey.
Reading diaries will be collected and checked by the classroom teacher each week. Students are expected to have recorded at least 4 days of reading in the week prior.
Students are reminded during our ‘Setting up for Success” time each morning to change their take home books, but it is their responsibility to do so.
As students become more proficient readers and are ready to read their own chapter books or other texts at home, they are more than welcome to (as long as they are a good fit for your child), and this should be recorded in their diary.
Please note that teachers are still completing reading assessments. You may feel that the take home books that your child brings home for the next few weeks are too “easy” or too “difficult”. This will be adjusted as we complete our assessments, and throughout the year.

Weekly Reading and Spelling Home Practise Guide
This school year, your child’s teacher will be using the UFLI Foundations program for reading and spelling instruction. Your child will be learning new concepts (sounds and letter patterns) to build their skills in reading and spelling words. The UFLI Foundations program includes Home Practice sheets to help families support their child’s learning at home. This is a guide for how to use these UFLI Foundations Home Practise sheets.
