Exploring Our Place in Space
On Friday 31st July, our Year 2 students blasted off into an exciting day of learning during their Space Camp, as they continued exploring the inquiry question, “What is Earth’s place in the Solar System?”
The day began with a spectacular rocket launch, as the Astronauts and Space Commanders donned their helmets, climbed into their “rocket ships” and blasted off into space! The students then explored the solar system, learning about the Sun and the eight planets. They discovered that the Sun is a star at the centre of the solar system and that the planets orbit the Sun. They also learnt fascinating facts about each planet and used the mnemonic “My Very Energetic Mother Just Served Us Nachos” to help remember the order of the planets from the Sun.
The learning continued through hands-on activities, including creating orbiting solar system crafts that helped the students visualise the movement of the planets around the Sun. They then designed and constructed their own straw rockets before exploring the night sky using the SkyView app, where they discovered planets, stars, constellations and satellites.
The day finished with exciting rocket competitions, where students proudly represented their classes and celebrated creativity, participation and some impressive rocket flights. Well done to all students for their encouragement and enthusiasm during the multiple rocket launches!
It was a fantastic day of wonder, discovery, movement and hands-on learning, giving the Year 2 astronauts a deeper understanding of Earth’s place within our incredible solar system.
