Year 6 Sustainability Excursion
As part of our Sustainability unit, the Grade 6 students recently visited the Werribee Open Range Zoo. The excursion provided an exciting opportunity to learn about how zoos can help protect wildlife while caring for the environment.
During the visit, we discovered several sustainable practices used by the zoo. One of the most interesting was the use of recycled water to support animal habitats and irrigate the zoo grounds. We also learned about recycling and waste-reduction programs that help minimise the amount of rubbish sent to landfill, as well as the zoo’s important role in protecting endangered species.
Students enjoyed seeing a wide variety of animals throughout the day. Highlights included giraffes, zebras, rhinos, lions, hippos, gorillas, meerkats and cheetahs. We also visited the Australian Trail, where we saw koalas, kangaroos and emus.
The safari bus tour was a memorable experience, allowing us to observe many African animals roaming across the open plains. It helped us understand how zoos can create environments that closely resemble animals’ natural habitats.
The excursion reinforced the importance of sustainability and conservation. We learned that protecting wildlife involves more than caring for animals—it also includes conserving water, reducing waste and protecting ecosystems for future generations.
The excursion was an engaging and educational experience that helped bring our classroom learning about sustainability to life.
