A Walk Around Town

Year 3 Excursion

On Friday, October 13th, the Year 3 students traveled by bus into the city. We walked around the city and learnt about all the different cultures that make up our Melbourne community. Our tour guides took us to many amazing places and landmarks.

We learnt about how the Aboriginal people welcomed other mobs into their area using eucalyptus leaves in a smoking ceremony. The smoke is like a warm hug.

We learnt about Matthew Flinders, an English explorer credited with naming Australia. He has a street and a station named after him.

We learnt about John So, who was born in China and became the first Lord Mayor elected by the people of Melbourne.

We learnt about Simcha Baevski (Sidney Myer), who was a Jewish businessman born in Russia who built Myers department store on Bourke Street.

We learnt about the Chinese, Greek and Italian influences on our community and the foods we eat.

We ended our excursion with a picnic in the park.

We are looking forward to finding out more about how all the different cultures in our community celebrate throughout the term.
