Year 5 Incursion
As part of our Inquiry learning, our Year 5 students recently enjoyed an exciting and hands-on Natural Hazards incursion with Fizzics Education. Students explored a range of natural hazards, including earthquakes, volcanoes, bushfires, tornadoes and viruses, through a variety of fun and interactive experiments and activities.
Our students were fascinated by the demonstrations and enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about how and why natural hazards occur. Here are some of their reflections on this engaging learning experience.
Last week we attended a natural hazards incursion. We did an experiment where the water turned pink if you had the virus, showing how quickly viruses can spread on planes. We also learnt that the plates in the earth when they hit creates an earthquake and we also learnt about volcano eruptions and that before the lava comes out it is called magma. We completed a puzzle and we had these two rocks and someone would put on gloves and hit the paper with the rocks and it would make holes.
For Inquiry, we have been learning about natural hazards. Recently, we had a lady come from “Fizzics Education” to talk to us about natural hazards. She showed us an experiment about a bushfire which had a fire inside a bowl and she put a basket around it (for safety). She began to spin the bowl and it created what looked like a fire tornado. She let us play with the other experiments and some of them were about tornados, earthquakes, a virus, tectonic plates shifting and where the tectonic plates were around the world. For me, it was a very interesting, fun and exciting incursion.
