In the Classroom

Foundation – Year 2 Mathematics

Have you met The Mathscots?

The Mathscots animation series is designed to support both teachers and families in engaging children in mathematics. The stand-alone episodes explore a range of maths and numeracy concepts aligned to the Victorian Curriculum Foundation to Level 2.

The animations have been designed to build parents’ understanding of different ways in which they can support their children’s learning in mathematics.

In this episode the Mathscots are introduced. Prime, the puppy, lives at 3 Ratio Road and she has fun with numbers. Prime lives with Poly (the name being short for Polygon) and Poly enjoys playing with shapes. Prime’s friend, Buster, lives across the road. He likes to measure and bust maths myths. Buster lives with Chance, who likes to think about the likelihood of events.

As you watch with your child/ren use the pauses, prompts and questions to talk about the maths being presented. Keep an eye out for the suggested activities at the end that your children might like to explore after watching the episode.

Year 3 – Year 6 Mathematics

We know that it can be hard for parents to know how best to support their child with learning mathematics, so NRICH Maths has provided a short video sharing some advice that we hope will be useful to any parent or carer, that focuses on solving problems together.

Click the link below to have a go at completing the first game ‘Solving Together – Got It’. There is a short video you can watch to learn how to play or you can read the rules here. Once you’ve played a few games, talk about your ideas and try to come up with a winning strategy, you could even change your target to a different number!
